Wraparound Extensions
in Portsmouth and Hampshire

A wraparound extension is a valuable addition to any home. It increases your building’s footprint to provide more living space and, should you ever decide to sell your property in the future, an extension can heighten the resale value to provide a welcome return on your original investment. Use wraparound extensions as living spaces, home gyms, offices or kitchens. The choice always comes down to you, our valued customer.

C. Lillington Carpentry has project managed the construction of extensions across numerous properties in Portsmouth and the surrounding Hampshire area, combining our key carpentry and joinery skills with those of many other manual trades.

The wraparound design combines the two styles of rear-facing and side-return extensions to form an L-shaped addition. It particularly suits period properties with narrow strips to the rear and enough outdoor space to extend out into the garden.

Building Control Approval

Your local authority for Portsmouth or Hampshire will let you know if an extension needs planning approval. Because wraparound extensions combine the rear-facing and side-return styles, both of which fall under permitted development if they stay within certain criteria, planning permission is likely but not always essential. Much will depend on the input of the architect and the assessment of the structural engineer.

As part of the construction process, the wraparound design may need to see the original rear wall removed and the building propped. Local authorities will review the calculations of the structural engineer and the specification of the architect. We think it is a wise choice to prepare for planning approval, and an equally good decision to come to us for some advice.

Some people think of wrapround extensions as external builds because they take away garden space, but the success of a project owes just as much to what we can do with the interior. Our experience in carpentry and joinery allows us to cover the 1st-fix and 2nd-fix phases so that other trades can get back to work sooner, and we have the manual skills required to fit windows, doors, frames, skirting, architraves and flooring.

But that’s not all.

Because we bring a full range of manual trades to projects in the Portsmouth and Hampshire areas, C. Lillington Carpentry can also factor in the electrical, plumbing and heating supply. This is important to wrapround extensions because they often need to be bright and spacious; especially if the finished addition is planned for use as a kitchen extension.

To optimise natural and artificial light, we can assign the job an accredited electrician to install the main lighting for your room space, and LED lighting underneath the cabinetry to highlight worktops and to make working areas more visible.
